Confidentiality is one of the most important aspects of therapy, no matter what the client’s age. This means that the details of what is discussed in a therapy session remain private and are not shared with anyone else.
I will not discuss with your parents/guardians what is said in each session unless you explicitly ask me to or if there is a concern about safety.
Specifically, safety concerns I will always discuss with parents/guardians are concerns about self-harm or suicide, abuse or neglect, or that you may harm someone else. If I have concerns about safety, I will let you know what to expect about information that will be shared, and I will reach out to the appropriate adult or agency right away.

When working with clients under the age of 18, parents/guardians must consent to services. This means at a minimum, parents/guardians will attend the intake session in which I discuss what to expect and gather information about concerns. I will also let guardians know about our treatment goals and will check in regularly with all parents/guardians to touch base about any progress towards our goals and ongoing concerns.
Depending on your needs and what feels best to you, your parents/guardians may be more involved. This means we may talk more frequently, meet together as a family, or I may meet with parents/guardians on their own. The level of participation is determined together.

I do not work with clients who are ONLY able to meet via telehealth. This is based on my own personal preference regarding the value of work we can do together when meeting primarily in person.
I am happy to offer telehealth or virtual visits to my clients, as needed. For example, there may be a week that transportation is complicated, a family member is sick, you are on vacation, etc. You may also know that telehealth sessions will consistently be needed once or twice a month, such as to accommodate a parent’s work schedule. Although meeting face-to-face should be our primary strategy, we can absolutely be flexible to accommodate the use of telehealth when needed.

I am currently fully licensed in the states of New York, Michigan and Massachussetts.
State laws dictate that I can NOT have a therapy session with anyone who is CURRENTLY in a state where I am not licensed.
Unfortunately, this means that if you reside in other states for a portion of the year (for example, college students who attend school and live in different states) or if you are traveling for a vacation in another state, we can not have therapy sessions when you are not in one of the states in which I am licensed.

We can schedule a free 15 minute phone consultation to discuss your needs, answer questions and determine if we would be a good fit for each other. Prior to your first session you will be sent several documents via the Simple Practice platform to complete online. These include documents such as consent to treatment, privacy practices, practice policies, insurance and payment information, etc.
The intake session (first session) is typically a little different from the rest because I will be gathering information to get a better understanding of your needs. As a result, I will ask more questions and take notes, and I may do more talking as I explain what to expect. If you are younger than 18, your parent(s) will participate in this session with you.

During the intake session, we will discuss your needs together and create an individualized approach that works best for you.
Typically, sessions will last 50-55 minutes. At the start of working together, we will usually meet once/week to both build our therapeutic relationship and to get the best results for progress. As we continue, this can be adjusted to meeting less frequently, such as every other week or once/month.
Sessions can be client led, therapist directed, or something in between, depending on what feels most helpful to you. This means a session could involve simply talking, playing therapy games, engaging in structured activities, or learning skills with a curriculum.
At times, therapy can involve collaboration with support people, such as your school, family members, or other providers. This could mean phone calls or participation in meetings, such as CSE meetings at school. Any collaboration is always decided together with the client.
